Every once in awhile I’ll toss the phrase, “investment piece” around, but what exactly does this mean? Well, for me it means something that I’ve spent a whole lotta cash on (to be blunt), which I intend to get a ton of wear out of. One example of an investment piece which I recently acquired is this lightweight jacket by Isabel Marant Etoile.
Except for perhaps my leather jacket, I rarely wear blazers or jackets, for some reason. I was actually going to send this jacket back when I got it. You see, I thought I couldn’t pull it off; I thought that one had to be smallish and petite to be able to wear a cropped blazer. I even repackaged the jacket, ready to drop it off at the post office when I decided to try it on…one more time. And I’m glad I did! I tried it on with dresses and with jeans, and I loved it.
I love how the jacket makes me feel like a chic Parisian. Yes, even while wearing my Birkenstocks.
My girlfriend Sandy asked me to put an outfit together for her, something she’d like to wear for our friend’s going away party (at a yet to be determined location). Since it will be for a party, and a fun one at that, I thought of some leather and well, leopard print (!) for her. Something a little fun and outside her comfort zone, shall we say?
I first discovered the French Kande line of jewelry when I spotted the lovely Susan wearing some of their pieces. Susan, if you don’t know, is the blogger of Une Femme d’un Certain Age and if you aren’t following her blog yet, you should! She has such a fantastic sense of style and can make even a paper sack look appealing. I’ve learned a great deal from her and I just love how she puts her outfits together.
But back to French Kande…these pieces are not only exquisitely made but they also offer us a glimpse into the past. You see, the stars of this jewelry line are the medallions that founder, Kande Hall herself has been collecting over the years. She combines these medallions with precious stones, metals, and crystals, and the end products are simply gorgeous.
Here’s me wearing a few pieces from the FK collection:
The pieces are quite special and beautifully crafted. They may seem heavy at first glance, but they are actually quite comfortable and easy to wear, and I think, bring so much to an otherwise ho-hum outfit.
What sorts of statement jewelry pieces do you enjoy wearing? or do you prefer to keep your jewelry more on the subdued side?
I vaguely remember when I got my first pair of Birkenstock sandals. I’m pretty sure I was in my early 20’s and I bought them from a Birkenstock shop in my hometown of Fullerton. The pair I got was the Milano style pictured below, and can you believe that I only got rid of them 1 month ago? That means I had (and wore) them for well over 20 years! I don’t know about you but in my book, that’s an amazingly LONG life span for a shoe. So when it came time to find my replacement pair of Birk’s, I decided on something fun and without a strap this time around. This Arizona model pictured above, in a luscious silver tone, will definitely be on heavy rotation on my tootsies this spring and summer. I’ve been pairing them with both dresses and jeans and in usual Birkenstock fashion, they are incredibly comfortable. Here’s to another 20 plus years!
I am a huge fan of second hand and consignment shops so when I heard about the Real Real on the blog, Already Pretty, I was very curious, to say the least. You see, the Real Real takes consignment shopping to another level, in my opinion. It takes it to a very luxurious and exciting new level, where the shopper can, from the comfort of her (or his) own home, find that classic Chanel handbag, or a pair of Gucci loafers only worn twice that’s still in mint condition, or even a pair of brand new, with tags, J Brand jeans.
The Real Real even carries items for your home. Need an embroidered silk rug or a pair of Murano table lamps? Well then stop by the Real Real and have a look! Perusing and purchasing on this site does require a “membership” which is free, but you can upgrade to either the “First Look” membership at $5 per month where you get 24 hour advance access to sales, or the “Premium First Look” membership for $20 per month where you have all the perks of “First Look” plus 2-day shipping (instead of the regular ground shipping).
I have to say that I’ve been quite pleased so far with the purchases I made on the Real Real. The items came in a timely manner, packaged very neatly, and they were pretty much in the exact condition as described. Here’s a look at what I got:
Do you love the look of a sleek liquid eyeliner but lack the, let’s say, dexterity to actually apply this without resembling a raccoon? Well, look no further because I’ve found the most user friendly liquid-like eyeliner out there, I believe. It’s this one, Eyeliner Effet Faux Cils Bold Felt-Tip Eyeliner Penfrom Yves St. Laurent. It really is like a felt-tip pen and it goes on so smoothly and easily that it’s practically fool-proof. And ladies, believe me, I have tried them all! At $34, I call this an investment for the eyes and well worth it. The additional plus is there is absolutely no flaking and it’s long-wearing, AND, one tube of this stuff lasts about 2 months (and this is with daily use). Remarkable!
My friend Vicki asked me to put an outfit together for her. She’s a no-nonsense kind of gal who speaks her mind, values her independence, and is also quite practical. So, as I thought about what I’d choose for her, I knew I wanted to give her a sporty sort of elegance. Here’s what I came up with and I think these pieces would look absolutely fabulous on her!
I mentioned the other day that I ordered a pair of New Balance sneakers from J Crew. These 620 sneakers in gold salt (isn’t that a great name?), are made of mesh and suede and fit true to size. I put these on right away after they arrived last night, took my dogs for a walk around the block, and felt like I was walking on air! I know that sounds so cliche, but it really did feel that way. Extremely comfortable and very light on the feet. According to the the J Crew website, their design team worked with New Balance to create “never before seen color combinations”. And some funky color combinations they are! Take a look:
I can see myself wearing these sneakers with everything from jeans to shorts, and even with some casual dresses and skirts. The color is neutral enough to go with lots of color schemes. If you’re looking for a new pair of comfy shoes, these might be just up your alley.
And I think I’ll continue to wear them until I take my last breath. I find something downright appealing about them, and I love to pair my Doc Martens with a long, flowy dress (which happened to be what I wore to work today).

I love discovering family-owned businesses where you know the folks who are running the show are totally in love with what they do. That’s the impression I got when I stumbled upon a Georgia-based company called Sugarboo Designs. It was during a day of Christmas shopping when I found some of their canvas bags in a shop in Pasadena. These bags are whimsical yet functional and can easily fit your makeup, pens, and even a couple or three medication bottles! Quite durable too, they’ve held up quite well with all the crap I throw in there.
This is the one I have, with this very eloquent Audrey Hepburn quote.
Here are a few more that I ended up buying as gifts:
My next WANT from the Sugarboo line? this awesome welcome mat! What’s not to love?
