What To Wear Thursday

IMG_0972

Isn’t it funny how something as simple as switching out a pair of shoes can change an outfit so dramatically? I first had this outfit paired with my high heeled EF sandals. I felt (and looked) a bit more formal than I wanted to. So I decided to look in my closet again and came up with these Clark’s leather flats that I’ve had for awhile but are oh-so-comfy! I ended up liking how they looked with the dress and blazer so that’s what I decided on footwear-wise.

The casualness of the outfit was interrupted just slightly by the Isabel Marant blazer which can make any outfit a little more chic, don’t you think?

I’m also getting a lot of wear out of this dress .  By James Perse, it’s quite form hugging but at the same time super comfortable.  The fabric is very stretchy and soft and I’m so glad I went down a size from 2 to 1 because the fit is so much better. The size 2 just had too many loose “sections”, shall we say.  As you can see, the dress is what’s known as “midi” length, where it hits just at mid-calf.   This can make walking a little tricky if you’re someone who likes taking big steps in your stride, so keep that in mind if you decide to order this dress.  I love the dress so much that I just take smaller steps, problem solved.

Frump Alert

The moment I put these pants on this morning, I felt frumpy.  I knew this outfit was off kilter in some way and I blame the pants.  Well, I don’t really blame the pants but I blame me for putting the pants together with the rest of the clothes I wore today to give me a sort of middle-aged-vibe.  I’ve concluded that wearing pants that have banded ankles, as shown in the photo, should not be paired with a blazer.  What do you think? What makes you feel frumpy?

Something Old, Something New

Sweater–several years old, 525 America Jeans–J. Crew Shirt– Everlane Necklace–French Kande Sandals–Eileen Fisher

I wore this outfit to church yesterday.  I needed something to throw over the tee shirt and jeans I had on but I really didn’t want to wear anything too heavy or too  complicated. I peered into my closet and found this sweater. I figured it was the right weight, the right length, and was simple enough with its clean lines.  The sweater was a gift from my girlfriend Deana, oh, from a few Christmases ago. It’s still in fabulous condition despite its age, just some minor pilling and has incredibly held its shape quite well for being 100 percent acrylic. I’m trying to “shop” in my closet more because I realize that I have some really nice clothes hanging in there that I haven’t worn in a long time! And let’s face it, my credit card needs a “time-out” right now.  The jeans I’m wearing here are fairly new and I’ll be doing a review on them soon so stay tuned.

What do you have in your closet that you love but haven’t worn in a long while?

Dream A Little Daydreamer

I’m a total sucker when it comes to tee-shirts.  Show me a one that is soft, comfy, and has a cute picture on the front of it and I’ll show you my wallet.  That pretty much describes the tee’s from Daydreamer LA.  I first found out about this LA-based company when I was shopping in a boutique called Elisa B.  Only it wasn’t a tee-shirt I fell in love with, but a sweatshirt with a vintage Snoopy graphic on the front, and the words, “To Live is to Dance…to Dance is to Live” written on the back. I knew my ballerina niece would love it.

Since then, I’ve acquired my own little collection of Daydreamer LA tee’s, some vintage Peanuts with fun sayings,

and this one is a favorite, DAYDREAMER_BUT_FIRST_BRUNCH_PJ_SET-7_large

Daydreamer LA also has a huge collection of rock and roll tee’s, like the Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, the Doors, just to name a few,

Out and About in Downtown Fullerton

I recently made my way back to my hometown of Fullerton and I was happy to see a sort of revitalization of the downtown area.  Plenty of eating establishments intermingled with some consignment shops and coffee houses.  I think that “eclectic” is a pretty accurate description of the downtown Fullerton vibe these days.

On this particular day I was with my brother and we both were craving a nice, juicy burger.  The Burger Parlor quenched that craving.  Burgers here are indeed juicy and the buns are pretty darn good too.

But the star of the lunch, I thought, was the onion rings.

IMG_0866Wow! Beautiful golden rings of deliciousness, I don’t know what they put in the batter to make them so light, crunchy, and irresistibly addictive,  and to be honest, I don’t really care, just give me more please!  Oh, and if you love a thick milkshake (and I don’t know who doesn’t), you must try one here.  We got the Cinnamon Toast Crunch Milkshake and yes, it did taste just like the cereal.

IMG_0930Our next stop was Hapa Cupcakes.  When I stepped inside this bake shop, I was mesmerized by the gorgeous display of cupcakes staring back at me.  What makes Hapa Cupcakes stand out from other bakeries is their alcohol-infused cupcakes.  Flavors like kahlua mudslide, rum coconut, and chocolate covered strawberry champagne, just to name a few.  They also carry a variety of non-alcoholic as well as gluten-free, vegan cupcakes.IMG_0868

Some sales and it’s raining!

Yay for the weekend. So what do you have planned and what’s the weather like in your neck of the woods?  It’s finally raining here in LA.  When it rains anywhere in Southern California, it’s headline news!

I don’t have much for today except to share a few sales that are happening RIGHT NOW so here goes:

Eileen Fisher is having its Now or Never Sale with up to 40% off sustainable items.  Lots of lovely basics in organic cotton and organic linen but you better hurry because the sale ends today at 10:59 am Eastern Time.

White House Black Market is having a spring sale with up to 70% off .  I’m new to WHBM, having just bought a gorgeous denim blazer that I’ve been eyeing and that finally went on sale, and have to say the quality and selection at this retailer is quite impressive.  I’ll review the blazer soon, I promise.  In the meantime, get yourself over to WHBM, ok?

And last, but definitely not least, the online retailer Steven Alan is celebrating its 22nd birthday by taking 22% off everything on orders $250 and over, plus free shipping.  I just love their selections of quirky, fun, and classic all rolled into one, everything from platform clogs to jumpsuits to shirt dresses.

Happy Shopping!

I Think I’ve Found It!

Do you have a “signature scent“?  Susan discussed this in her blog just the other day and it got me thinking about it.  I personally do not have a go-to fragrance but growing up, my mother loved Chanel No. 5.  Every birthday, Mother’s Day and Christmas, we would gift her with this classic fragrance so to me, Chanel No. 5 equals “mom” and feelings of warmth and love.

Today I was skimming through the Wall Street Journal Sunday Magazine (yes, I know it’s Tuesday but I’m sort of slow with my newspaper-reading), and there was a sample for Jo Malone’s Wood Sage and Sea Salt cologne and man, was I blown away by it. A little musky, the smell evoked feelings of being outdoors, and feelings of comfort and being wrapped in a warm blanket. I loved it so much that I ended up buying a 1 ounce bottle of the stuff on the spot. Talk about great advertising, eh?  Now I’m thinking, maybe I’ve found my own signature scent?

So do you have a fragrance that you love and identify with? If so, I’d love to know.

A Little Spring in My Step

My love affair with Eileen continues with these amazing sandals I recently purchased.  I love this color which is called “Sand” because a neutral shade like this goes with just about everything, doesn’t it?  And the heel height, a nice 3 inches, makes me feel so statuesque on my otherwise average 5 feet 5 inch frame.   Before you start lamenting that 3 inches is way too high for you, let me tell you that these shoes do not really feel like they are 3 inches tall.  The heel is what’s called “stacked” which thus contributes to the above average comfort level of these shoes.  The shoes feel quite sturdy and comfortable actually, even during my 4 hours of standing at work the other day.  I love these sandals so much that I just ordered them in black.

Come On, Eileen

I admit, I have a bit of a love affair with Eileen.  Eileen Fisher, that is.  Over the past couple years,  I have collected quite a few of her pieces, from the funky harem pants to the classic cashmere shawl.  Her name is synonymous with high quality and simple, clean lines and her pieces are on heavy rotation in my weekly wardrobe planning.  I have been wearing these “slouchy pants” at least once a week since purchasing them.

Super comfy, they are made from a very soft viscose and spandex, so you also get the benefit of some stretch there.  I also love that I can throw them into the washing machine and they travel quite well and don’t wrinkle.  You can dress them up, dress them down, throw on a cropped sweater or an oversized shirt, the possibilities are endless when styling these pants.  True, the prices of EF clothing are on the high end but that’s what happens when you pay for clothes that are, in my opinion, made to last.

Thanks Eileen.
